Virtual Meeting with University of Calgary
(July 6, 2021)

Consul General Mr. Manish had a virtual meeting with Dr. Ed McCauley President and Vice-Chancellor of University of Calgary on 6 July, 2021. Professor Janaka Ruwanpura, Vice-Provost and Associate Vice-President Research (International) and Dr. Andrea Delgado Morrow, Director, International Relations were also present during the meeting. Both sides discussed and reviewed the current engagments between Indian academic institutions and University of Calgary, enrollement of Indian students in the University and exchanged ideas to further improve relationship in the areas of higher education, reasearh & development, academic exchanges, student mobility etc. Prof Janaka made a presentation on their vision for global engagment, including with India. Consul General gave an overview of New Education Policy and possbility of 100% FDI opportunities in educational sectors; collaboration of the Univeristy with Indian companies like ONGC and Mphasis. CG also discussed the possibilty to establish an academic Chair for Indian Studies in the University, celebration of "India Day" and India@75 - Azadi Ka Amrut Mahotsav. Dr. McCauley welcomed the proposal to celebrate India Day and partner with the Consulate in India@75 celebrations.

Bharat Ko Janiye Quiz Virtual Prize Distribution (July 6, 2021)

The High Commissioner of India to Canada Mr. Ajay Bisaria handed over prizes to winners of Bharat Ko Janiye Quiz 2020-21 at a virtual function on July 6, 2021. Consul Generals Mr. Manish and Ms. Apoorva Srivastavaattended the virtual function. Consul General Mr. Manish also congratulated the four winners from the Consulates jurisdiction. Nine winners across Canada out of 350+ entries spoke of high quality of competition and appreciated the opportunity to get connected to India.

Several countries, including Vietnam, Lao PDR, Cyprus, Croatia, Sierra Leone, Zambia, Maldives, Malawi and Guyana have shown interest in the adoption of Co-WIN platform, persons familiar with the development said. Sources said Co-WIN is also being offered to WHO’s COVID Technology Access Pool (C-TAP).

On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the CoWIN global conclave, where countries that have shown interest in the government's digital platform were given an opportunity to adopt it. India launches NIPUN Bharat scheme in big push to meet learning needs of children

In a major push towards addressing the learning needs of children in the age group of 3 to 9 years, the central government on Monday launched the National Initiative for Proficiency in Reading with Understanding and Numeracy (NIPUN Bharat). The programme will ensure that every child in the country necessarily attains foundational literacy and numeracy by the end of Grade 3, by 2026-27.

India launches bamboo-based project to stop desertification, enhance tribal income

In order to reduce desertification of land and provide livelihood in rural areas, India has launched the “Bamboo Oasis on Lands in Drought” project, first of its kind in the country, at Nichal Mandwa village in Udaipur in Rajasthan. As many as 5000 saplings of special bamboo species – Bambusa Tulda and Bambusa Polymorpha specially brought from Assam – have been planted over 25 bigha (16 acres approx) of vacant arid gram panchayat land.

Modi Cabinet Reshuffle: List of portfolios for the Council of Ministers

43 members including 36 new faces were appointed to the Narendra Modi cabinet Wednesday. Work portfolios have been distributed among members of the Council of Ministers after 15 ministers of Cabinet rank and 28 Ministers of State took oath of office on Wednesday.
