Consulate News

Consulate General of India, Vancouver organized an Interesting fireside chat with noted anchor, journalist Smt. Richa Anirudh on 3 June, 2022 in the premises of Consulate. CG Manish also screened a PowerPoint presentation on economic opportunities and success stories in India. Around 35 Diaspora people attended the event. Hon. Sukh Dhaliwal, MP, Surrey-Newton also graced the event.

Consul General of India Mr. Manish along with Mr. Prasad Panda, Minister of Infrastructure, Government of Alberta and Mr. Greg McLean, Member of Parliament, Calgary Centre, Alberta inaugurated the India Pavilion on 7 June 2022 at the Global Energy Show 2022 being held at BMO Center at Calgary, Canada. Twenty Indian companies under the banner of Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC), Kolkata are participating in the event and represent companies in the field of integrated energy, transmission and distribution, gas & LNG, power generation & utilities, refineries and technology providers. The participants from India is being supported by the Ministry of Commerce & Industries, Government of India.

Consul General of India Mr. Manish participated in the inauguration of a delivery Centre in Calgary by Indian IT Company Mphasis on 7 June. Mphasis is IT solution provider specializing in cloud and cognitive services. The event was attended by Hon Doug Schweitzer, Minister of Jobs, Economy, and Innovation; Mr. Prasad Panda, Minister of Infrastructure, Mr. Nitin Rakesh, CEO & Executive Director, Mphasis; Brad Parry, President & CEO, Calgary Economic Development; Dr. Ed McCauley and Vice-Chancellor, University of Calgary and Mr. Rick Christiaanse, CEO, Invest Alberta. Located at First Tower in downtown Calgary, the company plans to create 1000 tech jobs over two years in Alberta, Based in Bangalore, India with a revenue of $1.6 billion in FY 2022 and over 36,000 employees, the company announced in June 2021 its intention to expand operations in Alberta.

Consul General Manish visited the office of Indian Ex-servicemen Immigrant Association in Calgary and met with the office bearers and members of the Association. CG was welcomed by Mr. Balkar Singh Sandhu, former President and Mr. Mohinder Singh Deol, Current President. During the interactive meeting Consul General highlighted the developments in India, India-Canada bilateral relations, various changes in the Consular services. He also highlighted the ongoing Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations (AKAM) and outlined the Consulate's vision to hold a programme to celebrate this occasion with Ex-Service Association in Calgary in September 2022. Indian Ex-servicemen Immigrant Association in Calgary is a society of veterans who have served in Indian Armed forces and now live in Calgary area.

Bankura, Bikna – Dokra art
Bikna is a village in Bankura-II Block in Bankura District of West Bengal. The history of the Dokra artists in Bikna is about 150 years old. A group of craftspeople at that time migrated from Chotonagpur region and settled to Rampur beside Bankura. Over the time Bikna has become a hub Dokra artists and their habitation is known as Shilpadanga. Bankura is the nearest railway station and is 3 km away from Bikna. Bankura is well connected to Kolkata and can be reached by train in 4 hours. It takes approximately 3.5 hours to reach Bikna by car from Kolkata. Presently 163 craftspeople including women in 58 families are associated with this ancient tradition. They are from community known as 'Karmakar' which means metal workers. The artists has organised themselves under a society called Bankura Bikna Hastajata Dokra Kutir Shilpa Kalyan Samity which was set up in 2013.

Neer Mahal, Tripura

Neer Mahal (meaning “Water Palace”) is a former royal palace built by King Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur of the erstwhile Kingdom of Tripura, India in the middle of the lake Rudrasagar in 1930 and was completed by 1938. It is situated in Melaghar, 53 kilometers away from the Agartala, the capital of Tripura. The palace is situated in the middle of Rudrasagar Lake and assimilates Hindu and Muslim architectural styles. The palace is the largest of its kind in India and the only one in Eastern India. There are only two water palace in India another one is the Jal Mahal in Rajasthan.
