Expanded India Canada Air Transport Agreement

On 14 November, 2022, the Minister of Transport of Canada, Hon’ble Omar Alghabra made an announcement during a press conference at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport regarding expanded Air Transport Agreement between India and Canada. The Minister said that the expanded agreement will allow the designated airlines of the two countries to operate an unlimited number of flights between the two countries, a sizeable increase from the previous agreement that limited the number of flights from each country to 35 flights per week. According to the Minister, this is a significant development as it will allow airlines of both the countries to better respond to the needs of the communities and India-Canada air transport market by providing more flight options and better choice and convenience to all. He added that by making the movement of goods and people faster and easier, the new agreement will also facilitate trade and investment between the two countries, which will help the businesses to grow and succeed. The new rights under the expanded agreement will be immediately available for use by the airlines. He also said that the officials of the two countries will continue to remain in contact with each other to discuss further expansion of the agreement. The new agreement gives designated Indian air carriers access to Toronto, Montreal, Edmonton, Vancouver, and two additional points to be selected by India. Similarly, Canadian air carriers will gain access to Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Mumbai. The other cities in both countries can be served indirectly through code-share services. It is also important to note that rights for all-cargo services are already unrestricted.

India has innovated extensively in digital public goods, and that has paved the way for the rapid rise of digitization in finance in India, probably faster than anywhere else in the world. UPI’s universality is on rise, and we are seeing UPI and RuPay make forays in UAE, Japan, the US, Singapore, Bhutan, Nepal, and recently in France. However, UPI and RuPay are only a part of the story. Digital public infrastructure and goods in India encompasses a great deal more.
